Grit, Smith Rock State Park, Oregon, United States

Photograph by Katie Paulson

This photo was taken during my first climbing trip to Smith Rock State Park, my new backyard.  I climbed into one of Smith’s famous huecos and snapped some photos of the dirty hands that came my way.  At Smith, once you have hiked down into the valley, you wont leave without a fine layer of grit coating your whole body.  The longer you spend baking in the sun, the rock finds its way into your clothes, ears, hair; it wraps itself tightly around you.  You always take a piece of Smith home with you.
