Barun Valley is located inside the Makalu Barun National Park, Nepal. This unique landscape shelters some of the last pristine mountain ecosystems on earth. Rare species of animals and plants flourish in diverse climates and habitats, relatively undisturbed by human kind.

In some of the ancient Buddhist scriptures, Seven Shangri-la (Nghe-Beyul Khimpalung) are described as mystical and spectacularly beautiful evergreen places where no one gets old. It is written that in case of a cataclysm, life will remain only in these seven areas of the world. In those books, one of the Shangri-La is mentioned to be situated somewhere at this Makalu-Barun region.

This particular place is called Nghe, meaning a ‘Sacred Place’ in the local language. From here, with about 600 meters (2000 feet) of serious climb towards the mountain top, one can reach a huge mountain cave. From inside the rocky ceiling of that cave, an amazing waterfall sprouts. Local people call this ‘Shiva Dhara’, which means ‘the holy tap of the Lord Shiva’.
