A rainbow of colorful sand and rock stretches out under a sapphire sky as far as the eye can see. Arizona’s Painted Desert gets its incredible coloration from stratified layers of easily erodible shale, siltstone, and mudstone dating to the Triassic – over two hundred million years ago.
