I photographed this Old World Swallowtail butterfly caterpillar (Papilio machaon) during a walk with my labrador Darwin along a mountain stream in Vercors. Despite its name, this butterfly species occurs across not only Europe but also Asia and North America. In lower elevations, this species can often be found in gardens – at higher altitudes, it frequents meadows and hillsides where flowering herbs are abundant.
Located in the French Prealps, the Vercors, where this caterpillar was photographed, is a mountain range and plateaux area in the French départements of Isère and Drôme.
