Life on a Mountain, Mount Shasta, California, United States

Photograph by Julia Sherwood

When I was seven and my brother was ten our parents decided that we were old enough to backpack. This became our traditional family vacation; backpacking in the wilderness and up mountains in the Pacific Northwest. This summer my brother and I took our mama up Mt. Shasta for her 60th birthday. This panoramic view from our base camp at Helen Lake shows the moonrise in the east and the sunset in the west.
