Monkey Business, Ao Manao Bay, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Thailand

We took a day trip to Ao Manao, a small settlement located on an air force base just outside the town of Prachuap Khiri Khan in central-southern Thailand. The air base is open to the public and contains a beautiful beach and a small colony of spectacled langur monkeys (also known as dusky leaf monkeys), named after the distinctive markings around their eyes.

We were naturally cautious with them as monkeys can be quite aggressive, but these little creatures were very sweet and politely accepted the snacks we offered.

I should add that these monkeys can bite when they get over excited, as we learned a few days later when we returned to feed them again. One of them spotted a whole bag of peanuts in my partner’s hand and blood was drawn in the resulting scuffle. (Five anti-rabies vaccinations later he is fine 🙂
