Kayaking with the Humpbacks, outside Tromso, northern Norway

It is not all dark during the Polar night. Even with the sun not rising above the horizon for nearly two months, – there is still enough light for kayaking and enjoying the sight of feeding humpbacks that have come to our coast to gorge on the herring that has amassed in the fjords. This season, the whales stayed around for a month before moving on, bringing us much entertainment. At close to 70° North, Tromso is the largest town in northern Norway, and an excellent base for outdoor activities like kayaking and skiing.
Been whale watching before but that was from a small boat and thought it thrilling – can only imagine the rush of being as close to them as you can be in a kayak. Wow!
