Adventure Travel Photo of the Day: Black Bear, Wood Buffalo National Park

Big Papa, Wood Buffalo National Park, Northwest Territories, Canada

During my last stay in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, I went for a hike (many actually) in Wood Buffalo National Park. I came upon a small clearing where a large black bear was grazing. I have encountered bears before, but its usually their rear end as they run away. This “Big Papa” , however, stood his ground and let me know, I have come this far, and shall go no further. I calmly backed away as he watched. Terrifying & exhilarating at the same time!

  1. Great picture and story. I’ve been there too, with the bear that is, and always found the experience with another creature potentially higher on the food chain exciting, frightening, and awe inspiring. Thank goodness for wild places which help us keep life in perspective, humbling…
