Building Bridges, Outside Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada

Photograph by Karl Johnston

This scene was photographed just outside of Yellowknife, in Canada’s Northwest Territories atop a small rocky cliff. The rocky landscape is dotted with trees and lakes all around the area, with the aurora running overhead. This image is composed of several photographs stitched together and taken within a short time-frame to make sure the aurora fit together perfectly. I held my breath while photographing these combined images over the course of several minutes- the Northern Lights are unpredictable and can “dance” across the sky at any moment. I held my breath hoping, ironically, that the lights would hold their pose before beginning their magical dance across the Milky Way. The pink glow in the distance is from Yellowknife’s city lights.

Karl’s shot is breathtaking…it hardly looks like earth, more like a magical fantasy world!
