Pelican Light, Rapids of the Drowned, Slave River, Northwest Territories, Canada

Photograph by Karl Johnston

I photographed this scene in the summer of 2010 as the light faded below the horizon around 11:30pm. The sun finally went down and allowed me to take this (lucky) shot of the pelican bracing against the roaring rapids’ current. I used a long exposure to capture the water’s power and movement and a rock-solid grip to keep my rig steady.
