Viewed from the air over Israel, the Dead Sea stretches out below in all directions. In the distance, across the vibrant blue water is Jordan.

Over the past few decades, the Dead Sea has been shrinking rapidly due to the diversion of incoming water from the Jordan River to the north. From 1970 to 2006, the water level dropped 72 feet. Accompanying the drop in water levels on the surface, the groundwater level has also dropped, causing large sinkholes to appear along the western shores. Incoming freshwater dissolves salt layers, quickly creating subsurface cavities that collapse to form these sinkholes.
