Even though snakes aren’t actually slimy and generally don’t go out of their way to be aggressive toward humans, a fear of snakes is one of the most widely held phobias. If you’re one of those who finds slithering snakes scary, Stefano Scheda’s 1st Place winning shot of a Madagascar Tree Boa is sure to leave you shaking! These scaly serpents prefer a diet of bats and birds, and occasionally descend from the trees to hunt for small animals.

Wolves are beautiful creatures – and like most wild animals with very large teeth, they’re best viewed from a very safe distance! Barbara Beacham is the winner of our Audience Choice Award with her great shot of a wolf staring right at her!
Can you imagine walking through the woods, hearing a noise and then finding this looking at you?
Coming across a wolf in the wild…now that definitely is scary!

A fear of creepy-crawlies is nearly universal, and Citra Rahman’s shot of a centipede in Indonesia definitely fits the bill when it comes to scary things in nature!

Most of us drive across bridges without a second thought…but even those of us with no fear of bridges or heights might find ourselves having second thoughts about crossing this foot bridge, photographed by Dries de Wets!
If you are afraid of heights, the 80m long suspension bridge at the Lake Eland Game Reserve at the Oribi Gorge in southern Kwazulu Natal Province will have you trembling in your boots!

Julie Dawn Fox shows us how even trees can sometimes be scary!
This tree in Marl Woods near Conway, North Wales, looks though it has blood splattered all over it. Imagining axe murderers and other possible causes of blood splashes was quite scary!

Challenge newcomer Pauline Carroll shows us the toothier side of Australia, where giant crocodiles lurk unseen in murky rivers! That mouth of teeth backed by bone-crushingly strong jaws sure is scary.

Kelly Guymon takes us to Zion National Park – one of America’s most beautiful parks, but also home to some truly scary heights (and quite a few scary critters too)! Here, he’s captured the view looking straight down at the valley floor….more than two thousand feet below Cable Mountain.
